ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Vallauris - 1956 Exposition is an original Pablo Picasso linocut, printed in five colors, each from a separate linocut block, by the artist. It is signed in the plate, "Picasso".

From 1951 to 1964 Picasso produced a famous series of linocuts, to be used as posters for the annual exhibition of ceramics in the southern French town of Vallauris. Picasso had settled in Vallauris in 1948; famous for its ceramics, arts and crafts exhibitions and bullfighting, Vallauris proved to be a fruitful ground for the development of Picasso’s style and technique for linocut. Picasso also made his famous ceramics in the town of Vallauris, working at the local Madoura pottery. The Vallauris 1956 Exposition poster is probably the single most desirable of all Picasso’s linocut posters.

With exceptionally fine, strong colours, and in excellent condition, on a large sheer, with full margins.

One of a very few printer’s proofs, printed on Arches paper, outside the edition of 200, printed by Impremerie Arnera in 1956 and published by the Association des potiers de Vallauris.

Recorded in both the Bloch and Baer catalogues raisonne of Picasso’s original linocuts.
